All right. My blog stats are off the charts today. That’s all fine, the more the merrier, come one, come all, read our radfem brilliance
but WHY might it be that today almost 1,300 people have now read, or at least viewed, my old “Goddesses on Parade” post about the Brittany Spears birthing statue? And why have many of them apparently arrived here via the search term, “Brittany Spears crotch”? Is there some crusade in some internet venue somewhere having to do with searching for shots of Brittany Spears “crotch”?
Does anybody have any idea what this might be about? Anybody else getting visits from people using that particular search term? I can’t tell what’s up from my referring links at all– it’s all my regular crowd. But I would like to scathe whomever has all of these men desperately seeking Brittany Spears crotch shots. Too bad for them, the image link to the statue isn’t working; then again, the statue didn’t reveal any statue-crotch and it was an artistic rendering and impression of Brittany Spears. Yeesh.
I swear to the goddess on high, the things men do. Well, Brittany, I apologize. I hate the way you are treated. I have always absolutely loathed it. You never deserved it.

Well, according to what one of my co-workers told me this morning, Britney went to a club with Paris Hilton the other night and the paparazzi took a picture of her getting out of the limo and her skirt was short and they got a picture of her without underwear on.
This, people care about. This, people seek out. This.
It’s enough to make me want to hole up in a cave far, far away.
UGH.

It’s women, too, unfortunately, going, “Oh, how slutty and stupid and terrible!”
Yeesh. I mean, YES. Brittany Spears, by gawd, has a CROTCH. And WHOA, she sometimes *doesn’t even wear underwear*. SHOCKING!! Sheesh. I haven’t worn underwear since, what, 1970 or so? Except when having my period. Tampons are of the devil. TMI, I know, but still. I think all women should be required to go to Michfest just once, wherein, all women find their inner Amazon and realize the stupidity of so many things we women wear. It’s weird– the first year I went, I didn’t change anything about the way I dressed, except that one night at Triangle fire, when the drumming was other-worldly, everything about the night was, good wine, too
, I took off my shirt. Whoa. That was a revelation. I loved the freedom of taking off my shirt and not worrying about it at all.
The next year, on the last day of Fest, I walked all the way from the kitchen to the parking lot, on the last day of Fest, during broad daylight, shirtless.
Last year when I was getting my breasts cast, I finally took off all my clothes (other than at the showers). It was GREAT. Loved it.
At Michfest, everybody wears as much or as little as they want, and my observation has been, not all that many women wear underwear! Underwear is the devil’s invention, just like tampons, and don’t even get me started on thong underwear. Those are beyond satanic. There were lots of us back in the late 60s, early 70s, who stopped wearing underwear. There was a lot of information then about it being much better not to, and I’m specifically recalling, if I’m not mistaken, books on pregnancy and childbirth, alternative women’s health books, maybe even Our Bodies Our Selves . Well, that suited me just fine, underwear. Why.
Anyway, you see everything differently when you return from Fest. Why are people so wierd? Why do they do so many of the things they do without thinking about it? Why do women wear the things we wear without even considering that we really don’t have to?
It’s perverse– pornography everywhere, all around, available in an instants, and still, you’ve got guys slathering over a possible shot up Brittany Spears’ skirt. Well, now that I’m thinking about it, that’s a rapist mentality, a perp mentality, taking from a woman what she doesn’t want to give, taking it against her will, violating her. Every one of those assholes searching my blog for shots of Brittany’s crotch (”crotch” is such a hideous word anyway) has a rape mentality.
I should post that in big letters in that post where the photo is supposed to go. “What are you looking for, perv?” UGH.
Heart
B..bu…but underwear provides another layer of clothing, when it’s minus 41 C and you are at the bus stop.
As for Brittany, I think possibly you would like to bet me a month’s bus pass that she didn’t leave her skivvies home for comfort?
Okay, Pony, I can get behind wearing bloomers when its -41.
True, she Spears may have been skivvy-less for reasons other than comfort; still, it’s her right to be so and not to expect cameras up her clothes, jaysus.

Well, I get a LOT of hits on my blog on a post about erotic tarot cards. Which is kind of funny considering the images are really quite tame, but in which post I pretty much toss most erotic tarot decks in the bin because of their patriarchal oppressive, male gaze perspective. But men don’t care. They just want to see the naughty pictures…drawn…on cardboard…comic-book style even. It’s retarded. Ok, I know that was non-PC but I don’t care. It IS retarded.
Well, the top post on WordPress today was “Brittany Spears Shows It All,” or something like that. Then there are all these people excoriating her in the most misogynist ways, especially women: “Oh, look, her boobs look like she’s still nursing, how pathetic.” “Oh, look, her butt looks like she just gave birth!” You say that like it’s a bad thing, you women! The hell. When your boobs were nursing, if they were, you were BEAUTIFUL! When you were giving birth and after, your butt was GORGEOUS. What level of self-loathing is this, that women post this kind of crap, then excoriate Spears for not being a positive role model, pretend to “feel sorry” for her, “That’s all she has,” and so on. Oh, give it up. I want to hear you calling the PHOTOGRAPHER a perv with a rape mentality because that’s what he is. She didn’t go out to be photographed up her dress, she went out to go out. She can’t keep the media away– why should she try?
I personally think she is far more beautiful now than she was when she was a teenybopper singing “oops, I did it again,” while men old enough to be her father across the nation were whacking off watching her, like they probably are now when they finally find “Brittany’s crotch” shots.
The shot I saw was just her butt showing beneath a very short dress. She might have been wearing a thong, you can’t tell.
Well, whatever.

Huh. Somebody with “horndog” in his e-mail address tried to post the link to the photo everybody was looking for. What a jerk.
I looked at it– I don’t know, to me, she might have been wearing underwear. Some underwear is just barely a string of anything. The photo was totally not erotic– just two women in a car, women everybody love to love and hate at the same time, but mostly hate. As a matter or principle, I count these women as members of my tribe, the people of women. I have nothing critical to say about them. But I wish every last ounce of bad karma on all of the misogynists who searched for this picture, and on all of the people who took their opportunity to heap abuse on a woman who doesn’t deserve to be abused.

AH though, I don’t know where you stand on Paris… but I would love to sit Britney down and say, listen, please… give the trash a rest for a day or two… you’ve managed to get rid of K relatively unscathed… there’s just no need to hook up with the queen of ’somebody get me another small exotic animal to hold up to my face quick take my picture’ just for a little seemingly positive exposure… Sometimes when I see pictures of Britney or listen to interviews with her all I can see is a young girl who hasn’t really had a chance to figure out who the heck she IS… not sure she’ll have any forward progress on that front stepping out in matching one-legged, Moulin Rouge-ish style garb with Paris Hilton…
Yeeech.
I don’t get many search engines but lately, it’s “groom” or “wedding”, I think because I’m blogging on the NYPD shooting. I’ve heard how other feminists’ blogs have had similar things happen.
Horndog? Geeesh.
*drift* Although I did do a happy dance when I found out my blog got listed on the New York Times Empire Zone blog. Don’t know how it got there and don’t know if I want to know, but they posted a link to one of my articles on the NYPD shooting. *end drift*
Between the visits and posts you got from misogynists and the horrible misogynist post that brownfemipower got on her site(which she responded to beautifully), not a good day for women’s blogs in having to face this behavior, but these blogs still prevail in the women’s stories they share.

Wow, Radfem! Well, who deserves that honor more than YOU. You have been tirelessly doing your anti-police brutality/racism/sexism/homophobia/corruption thing for *years* now, taking all the risks. GO YOU. That is AWESOME!!
Well, I have to see what some idiot sent to bfp now. :::rage:::
Amy, re Paris Hilton, I must admit she is not my favorite person ever. I refuse as a matter of principle, even though I honestly have no interest anyway in it, to follow all of this obsession with “the stars” and all of that, but even I have come across things Hilton has been reported to have said that curled my hair in their overall boorishness, insensitivity, superficiality. But when I read stuff like that, I think about the way people *look* really hard for things they can use to hurt women, and especially beautiful, rich, successful women. Who knows what is true, whether what they report is true, any of it.
I agree that Brittany Spears has a certain lost quality about her. I think she is one who who will change a lot in the years to come. I hate the way this latest episode is being cast in such classist terms, though, calling her trailer trash and all of that because… why? Because she goes barefoot, chews gum, and what, wears a short skirt? Wears bad hair extensions? It’s so ugly– like the glee with which people characterize middle-aged women who shop at K-Mart in hair rollers or whatever, these stereotypes that anathematize women and insult especially poor women who, if people really knew what their lives were about, they would be so ashamed.
Heart
Yeah I try to avoid celebrity culture, it is hierarchy in the extreme. The rich take money out of the system, causing poverty. I am ashamed at how easily I remember the names of movie stars as though it were important.
I also hate the way people try to shoot them down in the most misogynistic ways possible. I was at a party once where a woman was ripping apart Ashley Judd, because she peed outside, then complained when a bunch of men were staring at her. Everyone tsk tsked her. But this was New Orleans, where I thought you weren’t supposed to judge. I said “do you like to get stared at when you pee?” They said well she shouldn’t have peed outside. She’s a movie star, they have trailers” This from guys I have seen pee outside. “well if you’re gonna pee outside, don’t complain when men stare” Right.
It’s this idea that female stars are pampered and snooty. Truth is, they suffer, way way more than male stars. Female stars are expected to put up with bullshit like you can’t imagine, and they aren’t all that rich. They need to spend more money on clothes and surgery and haircuts, etc. I know how that sounds when so many women like me go without haircuts and nice clothes, but it still takes away from their income and if they don’t do it they have to give up their careers, and some of them end up washed up and in debt.
Nobody talks about this.
Thanks, Heart!
I read articles on celebrities, and notice all the criticism and slam against actresses like Nichole Ritchie and others for being too thin. And many of them are, possibly due to eating disorders like anorexia. But is ridiculing them and shaming them in print, with photographs emphasizing how many ribs or spinal bones you can see, or how sharp their clavicles are from one week to the next, really “helping” them? I ask this because this is the defense they use when they print them. Sometimes seeing yourself apart from yourself can lead you to think you might be ill, especially if you experience the distorted body image that accompanies eating disorders. But this behavior by the media is more of shaming and shunning them, clearly and it is to sell magazines, both to consumers and to advertisors which are magazine’s bread and butter in most cases.
And it’s no joke at all. Some of these women may be endangering themselves, through damaging muscles including the heart, premature bone loss and reproductive problems, in relation to hormone loss. They could die, like a model from Brazil just did.
What makes it worse in my opinion, is how the same magazines that shun them for being too thin, ridicule and criticize other women for being overweight(which I guess, “normal” weight being 100# even if you’re 5′10). They’ll put skinny women on the covers because clothes “hang” on them better, even if these women subsist on eating celery and kleenix tissue. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
When I was a teenager, I was told to drink milk shakes by my doctor to gain weight, at the same time I was put in a modeling class and told I needed to lose about 5-10#. When you’re a teenager, sometimes those messages stick with you more than they should too.
Dear god. Someone just attempted to comment and really ream me out for my Brittany Spears Statue/Goddesses on Parade post. You know what his/her problem was? Someone might be looking for the Brittany Spears crotch shot and instead read my post, and be exposed to HIDEOUS, HORRIFIC photos of real women laboring and giving birth, and they are, according to this person, “fat,” and NOBODY wants to see such horrendous things as real women, with their real, fat bodies, especially, giving real birth, and the resulting babies!! No, no! A thousand times no! Crotch shots only, shot by photographers with rape mentalities. Porn-esque shots only. NO REAL WOMEN DOING WHAT WOMEN ACTUALLY DO AND BEING WHO THEY ARE AND LOOKING WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE! If you post that you’re a “perv.”
Well, if you’re reading this, now-spammed troll, FUCK YOU. The women in my Brittany Spears statue article are fricking goddesses, just like my daughter, Jeyoani, who attended the births of her young siblings, wrote that they were (and I quoted her in the article). The women in that article are beautiful, they are real, they are completely and unfetteredly wholesome. To call them perverse is to be a perv yourself. You clearly are.
Jeezus. I hope everybody looking for the crotch shot gets to see the photos in my article INSTEAD! Hopefully that might help some of the idiots to tie an effing knot in it, dear goddess on high.

I wasn’t aware of your blog then Heart so had not read that post. I can’t really comment now, I feel a horrid rush of fear, seeing those men in their masks, and holding instruments. I had flashbacks and somehow too, I thought of the women tortured by Mengele in the Nazi camps. ~~~~

Heart, I get a lot of “kate moss commando.” Why they don’t just use the Google Image Search is beyond me.

For months a top search term for my blog has been stacy dash, as I posted with surprise about her nude shot. (you see, when I saw clueless I was young and so to me, finding out that she was 40 when her playboy shoot came out was really surprising to me).
We’ve had a recent uptick in traffic from “Brittany Spears without knickers”. (I had a brief post about the statue months ago and don’t recall mentioning knickers on the blog, though maybe my co-blogger Mary did.)
Go figure.
I get mostly technorati searches(as my blog isn’t in search engines), and now it’s still “wedding” and “groom” I think in relation to Sean Bell, because that term shows up too.
It’s interesting sometimes, because one day, the last name of my state’s AG showed up because I had written an entry titled “What would so-and-so think?” His office had a court order on my city’s police agency to reform and after it was done, things weren’t going well. Well, I started getting contacted by different people in connection with that process soon after and I think one of the searchs was done by someone in his office and they forwarded it to the head of their civil rights division, who I’m sure by then viewed my blog as a four-lettered word.
I hope that’s not repeated, but on any blog you never really know who is reading it.
Then there’s the US DOJ which appears any time certain flagged terms, “FBI”, “CIA”, “Department of Justice” or curiously enough, “FOIA”(for freedom of information act) are in a blog title or post and are detected by their search program. The last time, was yesterday where they were reading the post about them.
Use one of those terms and see how quickly they appear in your site log. It will usually be within several days. Oh crap, I think I just did it for you!
I’m sure by now someone’s already corrected you but it’s Britney Spears. Not Brittany.
Geez. 1647 people, still today, have viewed my Britney Spears Birthing Statue post since 5:00 last night. The mania continues apace and is so disturbing.
As are the troll comments (which I have spammed). Where do some of these people come from. One guy says, honestly, in just about these precise words, “Geez, I came hoping to get a shot of (derogatory term for women’s genitalia, specifically Britney Spears’) and all I got was a bunch of anger.”
My heart bleeds.

[...] When I check blog stats in my WordPress Dashboard, at any given time over the past couple of days, half the links on the Top 10 lists of blogs or posts have been about none other than Britney’s crotch. Clearly, I am going to check out a few and see why. In doing so, I’ve stumbled across some feminist blogs and have been absolutely blown away to find comments such as, “I swear to the goddess on high, the things men do. Well, Brittany, I apologize. I hate the way you are treated. I have always absolutely loathed it. You never deserved it.” [...]
I just came in via my WordPress dashboard which ranks the most popular posts right now -yes, I admit, the Britney Crotch in the title did it. Not so much to see it, but just to read the comments on them -believe me, it’s much more fun than the actual shots. But that’s beside the point. I’m here and I read what you all had to say. And that’s what I wanted to share with you: if you attract a lot of hits looking for something totally opposed to your beliefs, then why not use this to your advantage? A man looking for crotch shots being confronted with the beauty of birth is, like somebody here posted, perhaps going to think about women a little bit different. So why not use the system to your advantage, and put up a post with similar ringing title catch words-du-jour and a nice paragraph of how women think of [subject goes here
]? And then link to it from other blogs with likeminded ideas, so that the ranking goes up at Google, exposing your thoughts to even more -in this case presumably- men? Sure, a lot of them are pervs, but among them are simply curious kids -kids that can be taught, still. And let them all comment, out in the open, hiding behind whatever alias they’ll come up with -it will only add strength to your arguments as you engage them.
Just my 2 cents. Happy blogging from a fellow blogger passing through!
I do not like Britney on a personal level, I don’t agree with her lifestyle and I do not like the fact that she’s leaving her kids (including a two month old?) with a nanny. BUT I do not think it is fair for her to be treated like she is, it’s quite sad that we let her, a mother, a woman, be treated like this.
would this still be an issue? is she still that same britney who danced on MTVs? no way. shes a mom and quite “fat”, that is. so why are those pervs still getting into it? wouldnt they search for hot sexy steamy young singles? hmmm. ow, i forget, pervs..
It must be misogynist troll day. One came today in black face and made disgusting comments. I didn’t publish the post where he made some reference to hearing me on the radio, which must be the radio show I spoke on a month ago. I had hoped that crowd has lost interest. It’s tough being a woman on the internet some times. It’s just like the rest of the world.
It’s not good what these men are doing, but for at least a moment they come here and they see feminism, instead of what they are looking for. Is it a brief shock to them? But then often they lash out, because you are bucking their system.
It’s scary though that they know they’re not where they expected to be but on a women’s site titled Women’s Space and they still write comments that are derogatory about women. That’s male entitlement I guess. But you just got to keep blogging, because the good far outweighs the trolls.
yes, man here. but i aint looking for some derogatory blogs, just some logical, rational, humane, informative writings.
I couldnt agree with your post more, I personaly dont like the girl, but that is just me. I too made a post about the unfortunate picture she appeires in and my stats have gone from around 20 a week to just short of 200 yesterday and over 300 today, all looking for the same cheap thrill, kinda makes me feel dirty in two respects.
1/ seems like I jumped on the bash Britney bus and was payed in traffic for my efforts
2/ Im a man and its men who are not letting this thing go away, i dont know, I kinda feel bad about getting over 500 hits by using “Britneys Crotch shot”
This whole thing is really frustrating and indicative of the double binds women are constantly placed in. See, Britney wants to enjoy a night out so she wears a dress she likes, decides not to wear underwear maybe because of VPL (visible panty lines) because even a thong can show at the waist, or maybe she has other reasons, but they are her own and it’s no one’s business. The paparazzi is clicking away, laying practically underneath the car to get an upskirt shot, their cameras click, click, click in continuous shooting mode, so the woman can’t even uncross her legs to get out of the car without some perv shooting up her skirt. If you or I had done the same thing, the leg maneuver would never have been noticed from the normal angle most people are seen.
Ok, so what are Britney’s choices? To not wear that dress she likes? Why not? To wear it but wear underwear? Why? To essentially allow the pervs and paparazzi control her choices? They already constrain her life, as they do to all celebrities, one should think she should at least have the freedom to choose her wardrobe, no? Other bloggers are going on and on about how Britney, now being a mother as well as a role model to young girls, is being “irresponsible” to do this. TO DO WHAT? To decide NOT to allow the perv mentality of the press and paparazzi to run every detail of her life? How is that irresponsible? That’s right up MY alley, personally. You go, Britney.
Besides, please, we all know Britney has a “crotch” and if it thrills you to see it, you better take another hard look at yourself and I hope you don’t like what you see when you do.
WordPress says this is a popular story and my RSS reader sent me here. The fanboys are going wild for this…it even made CNN.com, aka Ted Turner’s Smut Times.
Rock on, Ginny. EXACTLY my thoughts. I just blogged about the stats issue in my more recent post about this, the poetic justice one.

Ever since I wrote about the whole Britney Spears sans undies issue (after the AP covered it, which makes it legit), I’ve been swamped by hits. The top posts lists are full of Britney comments. Add Paris Hilton and/or Lindsay Lohan to the post, and you’ve got a feeding frenzy.
I hope it settles down soon. I’m way behind on my tech news posts, due to this overwhelming demand for all things Britney crotch. Baffles me too.

I am am a man. I defend the goddess. I believe in light, no lechery. Please, please dont forget that there are those of us out here who are not bad people. I came accross this website on google when I spied the title http://womensspace.wordpress.com/2006/11/30/brittany-spears-crotch-question/
It made me laugh, then curious. Please dont forget about those who respect and admire you for your strength. Modern man definately has his share of the blame, but there are those who are waking up and bringing more to the light with them. Men may have silly, childish masoginistic tendoncies, but I know many who are, overall, good people who care very very much about this earth, its creatures and its people, no matter what sex they are. I like to believe I am one of them.
BTW, I am 32 and havent worn underwear for at least 15 years. I live in Chicago and it is -41. Fleece longjohns dont count.
Found this by accident. You’re awesome! I loved reading it.
Radfem I get a sense of your site from reading the posts, but wonder what started it all. How about a para or two there telling us Canucks and other confused and dazed. Not that the cops here are a whole lot better, here the targets are half-breeds and Cree.
Yo soaringbrain…we blood…
People always have always thought me odd for claiming to be a feminist.
I know whole-heartedly that this world would be a much better place were it not lead by the egos of men and I long to see that day.
Please know that while most men are dogs it is not universal.
There are those of us who know the truth and can see the light.

Yeah, Siloria. There are some very fine men in this world, and thank the goddess for them, may their tribe exponentially increase, and may they dedicate their lives to justice, peace, and an end to all violence in the world.
In peace,
Heart
And while we’re at it, what do dogs have to do with the rottenness that men alone have perpetrated? Just an expression? Well, how about an *accurate* expression for a change – Men are MEN. This kind of displacement of everything that is wrong with men onto other species is part of the problem, comparable to their projecting of their own weaknesses onto women. Let the slandering of innocent parties stop.
Yeah, so true, branjor. The reference to dogs bothered me too but it didn’t rise to the level of the part of my tired consciousness that could form any sort of cogent response! But you’re so right.

Changed my mind: I don’t think Britney “flashed” purposely, although that’s the title of some of the mainstream articles that provoked me on this “Now what?” rubbernecking adventure that led me to this site. Obviously the “low angle” shot near the pavement could have been taken from any other number of locations without infringing on Ms. Spears’ dignity, but I now believe Ms. Spears either did not think or chose not to do a number of other things that would still have permitted her to get out of that low-to-the-ground seating position in a dress that revealing. That doesn’t mean it was intentional. As for charging the photographer, we might enjoy that, but that might be difficult: public space, less privacy with fame, etc. Oregon or Washington has a law against that non-consensual “upskirt” photographs, but I think this was in L.A. The paparazzi is financed by unscrupulous risk-takers, so any judgement would likely not have the effect on the rest that we might hope for.
I still don’t understand the Britney phenomena: why so many seem obsessed with her in particular.
I’ve had a bot on my blog today advertising her crotch. Absolutely fascinating…. Death to Bot scripters!
I just have to put in my two cents after reading all the above and taking a side trip to see what Michwymmin is (which I feel I needs MUST attend). I’ve been a feminist all my life,my mommy raised me to be one. I have a mental picture of her out sawing wood for our fireplace with no shirt on because she was hot, and in her way of thinking if men can work shirtless because they are hot, so can women.
I stopped wearing underwear of any sort around 1978 (except for the longjohns while living in AK which I agree don’t count) except for when I was on my period because I AGREE tampons are of the devil. Couldn’t figure out a good way to keep the pads in place without panties. anyhow, now I have passed menopause and I am underwear free and I say more power to the little gals whatever their names are.
underwearless godesses unite!
Thanks for setting me straight – I love all our sisters in this world, but forgot who I was for a few brief moments there. Hopefully other guys who come across this as the top Google hit will think again before trying to see those pictures.
I do not intend to offend, I agree with much of what I have read however here is how I see it. I sent this to cnn.
First off I bet you don’t read my comment over the air because it is not in line with your right wing political views. I will post this email I sent you to other web sites for this reason, just to show people how one sided the cnn network is. Any ways how can Britney and her friends be degrading feminism by not wearing panties? It was my thought that feminism stood for equal treatment and thats why I thought I should support it, however if feminism has shifted it’s focus from equal rights and instead decided to focus on Britney’s wild behavior then I would say the cause of equal treatment is lost. I think the bigger question here is what harm did Britney do? Are we as a nation to say that it’s fine to send troops over seas to defend a freedom that is not real in the first place? The truth of the whole situation is that you have made a mountain out of an ant hill and the only people that rely care about this situation in the first place is bitter angry people who feel the need to attack anything related to women who decide to share their sexuality openly yet these same individuals are fine with letting violence run ramped all over the T.V, I would say their priorities are out of line. In closing how can any one be offended by what Britney did unless they go out of their way to go look at it on the internet, and if you go and look and you are offended this is not Britney’s fault, It’s your’s. It’s exactly the same as if you asked some one to let you eat a food you knew you did not like and then you blamed them for that after you ate it.
Truth, what a load of crap!
If Britney doesn’t want to wear underwear, so be it. It’s got nothing to do with feminism, its her personal choice.
Wow- I must admit, I fell into the curiousity frenzy that is wanting to see Britney Spears’ pantiless crotch. I’m not a man, nor am I a lesbian. I guess somewhere it is just the curiousity of seeing someone so famous in their real, raw selves. I am mystified by Britney Spears. I agree with an earlier poster that she has just not found herself yet. She is a young women, I believe who never had a “normal” life and is basically a mess. I do feel sorry for her. She certainly has enough problems right now, and the brutal press do not help. She is but a babe in a forest full of wolves. Thank you for your interesting insights…and this is a space I will visit more frequently.
With everyone talking about whether she did it on purpose, what it looks like, her c-section scar….you lose touch with reality that this is a woman, like us, who needs us to support her. It’s easy to be lazy in thinking and not recognize the bigger picture, the underlying messages in not the photos, but the frenzy that they caused…..
Thank you.
Enough for the “she’s a woman and we need to support her” type of stuff. I think we need to realize, regardless of her being a woman, she’s a mother and a grown person. She is an adult. She needs to be able to make wise choices–like wearing underwear, not smoking, and spending time with her babies–on her own. She don’t need to hold her hand. If she’s not doing those things, then that’s her mess up. I write about her candidly, but at the end of the day, deep down, I think she’s making a lot of really childish moves and mistakes. The only help she needs can be found within herself–if she chooses to do that!
Why do you care if she wears underwear? Why should her children? Who are you to judge what kind of parent she is? You don’t really know her, you just know what the paparazzi say about her.
So, let me get this straight. The opinions to select from are:
1) I pity Spears, so therefore I defend her right not to wear her undies.
2) I disapprove of what I’ve been told are the choices she’s made and how she lives her life, so therefore I condemn her for not wearing her undies.
Looks to me like both choices have been patriarchy-approved.
How about I don’t know how she lives her life, what choices she’s made, have no opinion of her as a human, a woman or a mother, don’t care if she wears undies or not, and I don’t know for sure that it’s really even her bits displayed in the photos and not the work of photo editors. Instead, I want to focus on the one who took the alleged Spears’ crotch photo, those who are distributing alleged Spears’ crotch photo, and those who are looking for alleged Spears’ crotch photos because they’re all a bunch of fucking assholes if you ask me. I betcha’ my opinion on the matter won’t get the patriarchy seal of approval.
[...] Simply for publicity. They need the attention. It reveals how empty these poor women are inside. One blogger seems to think that men are the problem. Well, when they are searching the web looking for pics of these ladies privates, yeah. But what is at issue here is not comfort (underwear is of the devil- arguement), but purposeful exposure (not accidental exposure) to gain attention. It is not about not wearing underwear, but about exposing themselves. When men do this it is a crime- a sex crime, thereby labeling them forever. When women do this, it is titilating and decidedly not a criminal act. [...]
You got it right, CoolAunt.
You got it wrong, Cavman Unleashed.
Isn’t it interesting the way these guys are such the experts. This guy’s tag line is something like “viewing all of life through the lens of faith, hope and love.” Right.

Yeah, well cavman lost me at “…purposeful exposure to get attention.” Attention from whom? From men, of course. So, the ball’s back in their court again.
Wow, I feel better! I hope someone sends a link to this page to Britney herself. She might benefit from this whole discussion.
Thanks so much to Heart and the rest.

What an amazing read!
(CIA / FOIA refs! Brilliant)
I’ve laughed.
I’ve riled.
I’ve cheered.
Radfem has had me in stitches
Above all, I’ve been so heartened that regardless of Britneys choices of lifestyle, of mother-care etc the singular incident of her being knickerless is being viewed as just that – an incident in its own right.
Superb

You got me.
Happy?
Yah, I’m a feminist and I DID do a search for “Britney Spears crotch”.
This is the first link clicked and already I’m chastised
Instant Karma, eh?
Actually, I had heard a paparazzi got a shot of the unclad crotch and it looked… well, unusual if not deformed… so I had to go take a peek, as it were. (Hey, it may be a weak defense, but it’s true!
But interesting place you’ve got here. I’ll be back, reformed and contrite.

Hey, may and georgia, we agree with you here, no worries. The treatment of Britney Spears in the media has always been ATROCIOUS. The current bullshit she is going through is DISGUSTING. Most people in her situation would have lost it a long time ago. I hope that sorry excuse for an ex of hers gets exactly what’s coming to him for his despicable behaviors.
