Free Nazanin! 18 Year Old Sentenced to Hang for Defending Against Rapists

This 18-year old girl, Nazanin, from Iran, is being sentenced to death by hanging for stabbing and killing a man who, along with two other men, accosted and attempted to rape her and her younger cousin. From a letter to Kofi Annan which you can sign (link below):

On January 3, 2006, 18-year-old Nazanin was sentenced to death for murder by court in Iran after she reportedly admitted fatally stabbing one of three men who attempted to rape her and her 16-year-old niece in a park in Karaj (a suburb of Tehran) in March 2005. She was seventeen at the time. Her sentence is subject to review by the Court of Appeal, and if upheld, to confirmation by the Supreme Court.

According to reports in the Iranian newspaper E’temaad, Nazanin told the court that three men had approached her and her niece, forced them to the ground and attempted to rape them. Seeking to defend her niece and herself, Nazanin stabbed one man in the hand with a knife that she possessed. As the men continued their attack, she stabbed another of the men in the chest, which eventually caused his death. She reportedly told the court “I wanted to defend myself and my niece. I did not want to kill that boy. At the heat of the moment I did not know what to do because no one came to our help”. She was nevertheless sentenced to the maximum punishment possible under the law, death by hanging.

  2. To Whom This May Concern:

I humbly ask you in the Name of God (Allah). Free Nazanin she is not a murderer she and her niece are victims. I know Nazanin did not want to kill her attacker she wasn’t left with much choice. She was trying to protect herself and her niece. These two women are the vicitms not the criminals. I know a little about Islamic society and a woman’s virginity must be protected. She is innocent she did not want to hurt anyone but three evil men wanted to hurt her and her niece. How can President A. of Iran say his country is a democracy when they have such barbaric laws especially against women they hang them and stone them to death, Nazanin did not get a fair trail she needs to be set free and her and her niece need consuling for the tramau they experienced. Here is America we have problems but nothing like this would happen unless those fanatical religous right movements take over. Here in the state of Arizona Nazanin would have been left off with the recommendation of going to psycologist and rape support group, She and her niece are the victims why don’t they try the perverts who tried to rape them. FREE Nazanin she’s iinocent.

  3. Just heard the news on CBC radio that Nazanin will be released, after ‘blood money’ has been paid to the family of the murdered man. Where the money comes from? Probably us. Check google news.

  6. I note the stories I’ve read thus far lead with the beauty queen. However, if she hadn’t done this, this story would have gone nowhere.

  7. In other happy news: MARY SUNSHINE please go to the Rain and Thunder website. They would like your mailing address in order to send you a prize I won. Yes!

See, I helped Amy get dressed.

And she was so knocked back by my exquisite taste in clothing and knowledge about lifeguard training costs, that she gave me a prize. Really. I would like you to have it. Read about it here:

“Sniff. I have the best readers in the blogosphere, I tell you what.* Here’s a big shout-out to everyone who wrote to me about the fat shopping “contest.” Your kindness in sending me links in response to a post that was equal parts joke, rant, and attempt to find out what other women think looks professional, because hell if I know–brings a tear to the eye. Because this is a radical feminist blog, you all get a prize. There are no losers here. Rebecca, who obviously spent hours of her time in an attempt to make me presentable, gets a free one-year sub to Rain and Thunder–the gift that keeps on giving. Pony, Lori, Jennie and Heidi each get the back issue of their choice from Rain and Thunder. You’ll all be receiving emails with info on how to claim your prize.”

So. Go to Rain and Thunder here. They know the story:

They have the instructions. My prize is for you. Sharsies. See?

  8. 🙂

I just read Amy’s post– AWESOME. “Thin privilege.” YES!

Not sure why your comment went into moderation, pony– maybe because there are two links in it? Just saying this so you didn’t think I was suddenly moderating you, WordPress is unpredictable sometimes.

  9. Didn’t notice Heart. Next refresh it was up.

Just to say, I am sharing my prize with you Mary because I think you will like it and you deserve it for your integrity. You know what I mean. But me “winning” and picking something for Amy she would wear (my track record here with picking clothing for young women isn’t to hot) and see my name on her blog, that was my prize. Some day soon I hope, I’ll be doing me some subscribing to some feminist journals.
