Praises for the World

Praises for the World

We Have A Beautiful Mother
by Alice Walker

We have a beautiful
Her hills
are buffaloes
Her buffaloes

We have a beautiful
Her oceans
are wombs
Her wombs

We have a beautiful
Her teeth
the white stones
at the edge
of the water

the summer grasses
her plentiful

We have a beautiful
Her green lap
Her brown embraces
Her blue body
we know.

Last summer I bought a CD titled “Glass Half Full– Songs of Comfort and Encouragement.”  It was created to encourage women with breast cancer and part of the sales proceeds go to breast cancer research.  That CD introduced me to the work of two amazing women musicians  whose work I’d never heard — Jennifer Berezan and Chris Webster.    So then I ordered some of their CDs.  One of the CDs I ordered is Jennifer Berezan’s “Praises for the World” which features a number of musicians, including Chris Webster, and which features Alice Walker reading her poem above, “We Have a Beautiful Mother.”

This is one of the most profoundly moving CDs I have ever heard.  The poets, singers, musicians, sing, speak, in turn against powerfully evocative music meant to draw people together around the beauty of the earth and all of its people and around the common longing we share to save it.
