The Way Men Hate Us

As of about 10:00 p.m. on the day of this post, there were three registered users on my Women’s Space/Margins boards, which women I care about and I created in 2000 and which have been a haven for all sorts of women since then.  We’ve supported one another, been friends with one another, cared for one another there for seven years .  These three registered users were:

Rick Astley
N***** N*****N*****
B**** Slap

They changed titles of threads from “Who was your mentor?” and “Warm Fuzzies,” to, for example, “LOL, I rape u” .

I have their IP addresses and other information about them and will gather as much information as I possibly am able and will then learn what my remedies are, what action I might be able to take against them.

They filled my boards with the evidence of their own self-loathing– with woman hatred, with race hatred and hatred of lesbians. Of course they filled the place with the hate speech which men call “pornography”.  These are men who appear to hate everybody. My hunch is, though, they hate themselves most of all.   They are to be pitied, of course.  But more than that, they should be understood as the threat they are to women, men, children, to all persons who care about the earth, its creatures, and all life.

We will fix this.  Have no fear!  Stay tuned, we’re working on it.

In the meantime, we can process it here.  They can’t hack WordPress.

I love you wimmin.  I’m so sorry.  I’m so not surprised.  This is what men do, or attempt to do, to strong women.

  1. I’ve had a feeling of dread all day, which is why I’m still up at 4AM. I just checked my email and it was full of spam (never happened before at that address), then checked the boards and saw they were down, so I came here. Now I’m seething.

Listen UP, you assholes. WE KNOW how much you hate us, so stop wasting your time reminding us. You turn it around and accuse us of hating you and wring your hands and wonder why. THIS IS WHY. THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE. Pathetic how it’s so damn scary to you for us to have ONE PLACE where you can’t go, so you have to force your way in and trash it. Pathetic little boys.

  2. And I’m so sorry, Heart, that you have to wade through all of their garbage and clean up their mess. Like you need more crap to deal with.

  3. Melissa, I’m so sorry.

I can fix what they did. We won’t lose too much, if anything. The final step of the upgrade to the boards is in progress right now and most of the work has already been done. 🙂 There’s maybe two hours left, after our ISP does its part of the work. The new upgrade will make the boards less vulnerable. I will call our ISP first thing tomorrow so we can make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

    Posted by womensspace | August 1, 2007, 8:34 am
  4. Melissa, thanks. I’m just glad we didn’t lose much. The threads are there, comments are there. It could have been much worse, so I will try to focus on that.

  5. I don’t know how you stay so positive in the face of crap like this. I need some of that, whatever it is.

Don’t stay up all night! (Yeah, like I’m one to be giving that advice.)

    Posted by Melissa | August 1, 2007, 8:54 am
  6. HA!

Eh, I’m not positive. I am just determined. 🙂 They can’t stop us. Nothing can stop us. No one can stop us.

    This, I know.

  7. I’m not surprised nor intimidated by their behaviour. I have been subjected to men’s violence all my life, all types of it and I know exactly how and what men and boys feel and think about us. I am only more determined in my course. Each attack only strengthens me. Hope for humanity lies in us.

  8. Thanks for this post Heart. You have my wholehearted support. I often remain silent because what I see from my fellow women is what I know and believe but apart from adding that heartfelt “Yes!” I cannot add to it. As to those infantile, disruptive elements; they are puerile and ineffectual. As if such things could intimidate people of such obvious courage and integrity as you, Heart.

  10. Was yesterday ‘Asshole Male’ day and I never got the memo? Yes, I know that’s every day, but between this and some other stuff, I thought maybe it was official.

  12. It’s funny how men will claim forever that pornography is harmless but whenever they want to intimidate or silence women out comes the pornography and the sexual insults. I wonder what living with that kind of cognitive dissonance does to their heads?

It’s pathetic that they did this. Sorry you’re having to clear up their mess Heart, but I also say thanks guys for the reminder (as if we needed one) that feminism is so important. They can’t bear women out of their control anywhere.

  13. I tried to access the Yahoo email account I have listed in my profile on the boards and it won’t let me in. If you get an email from my lookingglass07 account please post that info here so I can have more to report to Yahoo security.

  15. I’ve had two of my gmail accounts hacked, the accounts won’t let me in.

I urge all members of the forum to change *all* passwords for any accounts referenced in any of the emails of hacked accounts .

Where’s the security for gmail and yahoo FFS?

Oh, I know what they did. The grabbed the passwords for all of our womenspace board accounts and then tried them on our associated email accounts and bingo. Then they changed the password in our email accounts.

I sure as fuck don’t feel sorry for these dicks, and their dick-wannabee girlfriends.

They should eat and choke on their own shit.

Posted by Mary Sunshine | August 1, 2007, 11:38 am
  16. I’m so sorry, Heart. As if they’re not hurting women enough during the rest of the time, they have to hack a safe space for women…. the one place they are not allowed. These hackers have no shame, no conscience.

I received an email today from some misogynist tosspot which was also sent to many email addresses on the Margins Boards. It basically had just antifeminist pictures etc., the usual (nothing pornographic, thank goddess). I was freaked because it went to my regular email account and not my blog one.

To the hackers: fuck you all. I wouldn’t be you, you cowardly, base little wankers.

    Posted by Laurelin | August 1, 2007, 11:42 am
  17. I could get into my yahoo accounts- perhaps because my passwords were different from my womenspace passwords? I’ve changed them anyway…

    Posted by Laurelin | August 1, 2007, 11:50 am
  18. Yup, they’ve also just sent me a load of crap to my yahoo account. Do they think sending me gay porn is going to offend my delicate little eye balls – or something?

    Posted by sparklematrix | August 1, 2007, 12:01 pm
  19. I’ve reported my 2 compromised accounts to google.

I think the lesson is, for these message board accounts, to use disposable email addresses.

Also, cgi boards are notoriously easy to hack. “Script kiddies” can do it.

Even php boards can be hacked.

A php board that I read every day that has hundreds of members who are all computer geeks has been hacked in the past – *everything* was lost. We had to start all over.

It’s a form of warfare, a form of computer gaming for these little poison-heads.

Posted by Mary Sunshine | August 1, 2007, 12:08 pm
  20. I’ve had e-mails from your yahoo e-mail accounts Mary Sunshine, the hackers must be e-mailing everybody in your address book. What a bunch of assholes. How small does someone’s life have to be that that’s the only way they can their kicks?

    Posted by delphyne | August 1, 2007, 12:13 pm
  21. It shows how scared they are. How fragile there position is. If they are so scared of a small group of feminists then they must not think they are deserving of their position of priviledge, therefore, like Nazis they attempt to stomp out the slightest sound of dissent. They have my disdain, and, pity. Pity for being so utterly pitiful. But not that much pity, because once they think they are getting enough pity, they will cry the victim and then exploit that for their own gain.

    Let me cry for them…………

    “what about the menz
    what about the menz
    what about the menz

oh for the love of GOD, my male god who says I am rightfully in power, where are you, what about the menzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.”

Posted by Kitty Glendower | August 1, 2007, 12:19 pm
  22. The Twisty board has also been hacked, and it is a php board:

No posts are visible, and any visitor (guest) is told that they have been banned for obscene posts.

Posted by Mary Sunshine | August 1, 2007, 12:50 pm
  23. I got a new password for my Yahoo account and was able to log in.
There were two new emails in my account. One from somebody name Thomas Kidfiddelz which I am not going to open.
The second one was a request for a password reminder on my PayPal account. Fortunately I use a different password for it and I went in and checked history and removed all my bank and credit card info so no damage was done. Women, please check your paypal accounts immediately if they have ANY connection with info you used on the boards.
Heart, this is pretty serious criminal activity if they are trying to hack peoples financial institutions. If there is any info you need from me to help track these assholes for what they attempted please let me know.

  35. It’s funny how men will claim forever that pornography is harmless but whenever they want to intimidate or silence women out comes the pornography and the sexual insults.

Yeah. What’s so discouraging to me that women will also claim up and down it’s harmless, even when it’s so blatantly used against us. As if images and language exist as nothing more than discrete, innocuous things without any context.

    Posted by Amber | August 1, 2007, 3:39 pm
  36. Be very sure, I will avail myself of every conceivable remedy against these men, including legal remedies. I’ve sued pricks before, and won, big time. I have no problem suing pricks again, any chance I get.

Women, make sure you save (sorry! But we need to!) everything which evidences the harm these men have done to us. This is very important.

Mary Sunshine, I don’t mean these guys are to be pitied in the sense of, “I feel sorry for them,” more like, somewhere along the way, whatever humanity they might have had, they lost. I think they are to be pitied in the sense that all abusers and terrorists are to be pitied– from a very, very far and safe distance, while suing their asses off and bringing criminal charges against them if necessary and whenever possible and locking them up for life if that’s the only way to keep women and children safe.

    frog, old friend, sniff.

  37. As to the defenses of porn and the denial that pornography is hate speech against women, note who is targeted and targeted and targeted. Self-identified feminists who are yay porn? Safe and sound.

    Posted by womensspace | August 1, 2007, 3:44 pm
  38. I think the some of the yay porn feminists get some pretty nasty misogynistic attacks too, Heart, but they are more of the “you sl*t” variety.

But yeah, we’re a real threat to the MRAs so they go after us in the worst ways.

  41. I have all of their IP addresses. One is from Arkansas, one is from Atlanta, one is from Saskatchewan, there’s a bunch of them. I’ve got all the addresses for their ISPs who will hear from me forthwith. They are coming from a board, and I have the incoming links from that board, as well. All of this stuff? Turned over to authorities.

I’m sure they’ll hear from my ISP as well, because my ISP’s server was hacked and therefore security there was breached. I’m going to call Harbornet in a few minutes.

    Posted by womensspace | August 1, 2007, 4:02 pm
  42. The upgraded boards will not have a public link. I’ll give the new link to all of you, and then everyone will re-register, but it will be a private, by invitation only board.

  43. Heart,

I’m sad to see this sort of violence happen — and it is definitely intended as violence — but I’m glad you aren’t letting them defeat you.

Durham in Wonderland linked to my latest post related to media coverage of the Duke case while I was doing the Blogathon last weekend and temporarily had moderation off. The anonymous mob went to town. This morning I deleted a bunch of anonymous posts and set down a challenge. I’d repost their deleted claims if the authors would provide their legal names and phone numbers to be verified.

I doubt any of those people will be willing to repost their attacks and claims of facts when it could make them legally liable for the words they write.

  44. Heart,

The email address that you have for me has been hacked so that I cannot get into it.

This is probably true for several others of us here.

And I don’t see that it’s possible to figure this out here in this public space for obvious reasons.

Posted by Mary Sunshine | August 1, 2007, 4:22 pm
  45. Mary, do you think they also hacked into your membership at IBTP? Because what you described earlier sounds like a banning not that their boards have been hacked. Someone impersonating you could have got you banned.

    These are the options:

    My account has been compromised.

I’ve received a message that violates the Gmail Terms of Use or Program Policies.

I’m seeing unlawful pornography or copyrighted material in the Gmail or Google Talk picture feature.
My security and/or abuse-related issue is not listed here.

To read the Gmail Terms of Use, please visit:

Anyone with Google e-mail problems, try reporting them using these links. I will report your e-mails to them as well and will explain what happened.

  48. Women: The hackers do have whatever e-mail addresses you posted when you registered. They have only a couple of passwords– Kitty’s, Mary Sunshine’s, and Dakota’s. EVERYBODY should change their passwords.

And no worries re your confidentiality/privacy, I won’t do anything without running it by you women first (privately).

    Posted by womensspace | August 1, 2007, 5:43 pm
  49. One reason my own e-mails were spared is, I use all different passwords everywhere, so whatever they may have gotten on the boards didn’t match anything. It’s where people used the same password for the boards and their e-mail that e-mail privacy was breached.

  50. Hi Delphyne,

That whole Twisty board is down.

I used a different browser (SeaMonkey) that I had not used before to visit the Twisty board, and it gave me the same message addressed to “Guest”.

Somebody else here may want to confirm that.

Whoever did it took down both the boards, I figure.

Posted by Mary Sunshine | August 1, 2007, 5:53 pm
  51. That’s weird. I’ve been over to the Twisty boards today, and they seem to be fine. In fact, I just read a comment posted 3 minutes ago.

  52. Heart,

    Thanks for that. 🙂

Yes, I did go into google to report it right away.

Although … 😦 …. I figure that if they got into my account, they also totally effed with all my contacts and email archives while they were there. What chafes me is the loss of the addies of sisters here that have emailed me.

However, I have used those identities in other places (they took out the addy that I use for my Twisty acct, too.) and would like to be able to continue to use them for the sake of continuity.

To my sisters here: I’ve emailed Heart from another addy, so I *am* in touch with her again.

Posted by Mary Sunshine | August 1, 2007, 6:01 pm
  53. Thanks, JW

This is really weird. I’ll try walking over to the library and reading as a guest at the Twisty forum.

The hackers got both my email addresses (maybe from here?) and then somehow sent obscene spam to the Twisty board.

But still … the spam would not have come from my IP address, but from the hackers.

  57. Yes, Heart.

I just don’t have the headroom to remember dozens of different passwords.

I don’t know what the answer is.

Y’know … it was really a whole lot better back in the early 70’s when we organized easily locally, used phone numbers and addresses and just saw each other all the time. Plus we were always travelling around, knew where all the women’s lands were, and news of events travelled swiftly by word of mouth. We had so many dead-tree women’s publications it was ridiculous. These also were constantly passed around, along with books and articles and leaflets – they were always sitting around in communal living rooms. We had women’s centres, women’s houses where we shared digs, women’s book stores, cork bulletin boards.

We had ** NO ** interference from males at that point in the way that we have now with the internet. This whole internet thing feels very very fragile to me. We are material grrrls, not pixels and digital data streams.

Absolutely. And you know, that world still exists. It’s at Michfest, it’s at Outland, it’s in the offline paper publications that are like the old zines, it’s in the way we communicate, word of mouth. That’s where our power STILL is. That’s why Michigan is SO important, as is RadLesFest, as is Feminist Hullaballoo, as are women’s land. We need that back. I have SO many ideas, plans for that!

  60. Do you think we should change our email passwords even if they are different than our board passwords? I got the emails that you all got, and I just thought it was regular spam before I came here.

I have these dreams sometimes about men invading Michfest, and if I talk about them, my friends tell me I’m just paranoid or crazy. Fuck that. It’s not like I’m super worried about that in my waking life, but look at the lengths men went to trying to intimidate us just because we have separate internet space.

  61. 😀

You know, I think this is why Fest still does everything by hand.

Your tickets come in a hand-addressed envelope. Every communication is sent to you hand signed or hand written by a womon at the office. You can’t e-mail Fest. Fest doesn’t e-mail you, except very, very rarely with mass bulletins, like this year’s lineup. I think I’ve gotten two communications like that total over the years. No cell phones or computers are allowed at Fest.

It really all is a huge protection for us.

  70. How do you know the ‘hackers’ are male? There are certainly more then enough women versed in topics such as cracking, myself being one of them. I’m not saying what they did was right, or that I was responsible (I would never), but it seems rather wrong use this as an excuse to insult the other sex. You complain about how you get itemized and insulted by males, yet you do the same on right here. I respect female empowerment, but the womens rights movement was for equality, not us over the males. That brings me to my first point, if you truely want equality, why are you blaming males for everything wrong that happens? I know around thirty plus other girls who have the ability to do this if they wanted. It just seems rather unfair that you blame half of the earth for something that anybody from either sex could have done if they put their mind to it. That being said, the ‘hackers’ almost certainly used a proxy, so any location you think they’re from, they’re not. Just thought I’d let you know.

One of my most recent post to the boards on Wednesday was about how I am finally learning to take one day at a time and just enjoy each moment.

    I can’t seem to stop laughing :.)

My husband and I are OK physically and we have places to go and sufficient funds to deal with whatever happens with this so don’t worry, sisters.

I haven’t posted before, but I’ve been a long-time reader both here and at The Margins, and I just wanted to come out of the woodwork and say that you all have my support. And thanks for the song – I love Sinead O’Connor!

Worry, fear, potential data loss, and actionable behavior on us from men that women birth, raise and support.

I had two e-mails from the source mentioned, Thomas and his sister Katie. {rolling eyes}. I didn’t open them. I trashed them so they’re gone.

I didn’t have my e-mail address in the Margins forum, Heart, unless you were storing it somewhere. I had:

What complete asshats. Asshats isn’t strong enough.

And Danzig, really. Men get blamed a lot here because MEN DO THESE THINGS THE MOST. Sure there are women who have the know-how to hack message boards. How many of them would tho? And how many would posting such deeply racist and sexist crap? I mean really. 97% of sexual assault perps are MEN. In Canada, 30% of women will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes. *30%* And the over OVER whelming percentage of perps is, again, MEN.

Pedophile website promotes Montreal Children’s Festival

Montreal police are investigating a website that recommends pedophiles attend the city’s popular children’s summer festival to watch little girls.

The website bills itself as a place to “celebrate the splendor of watching little girls.”

It lists several child-centred events across North America, including Montreal’s Fête des enfants, an annual August festival for children and families.

The site gives the festival a five-heart rating, describing it as an event where “there are always plenty of little girls.”

Quebec provincial police said Wednesday they’ve recovered a Norco bike belonging to nine-year-old Cédrika Provencher, who disappeared Tuesday night in Trois-Rivières while looking for a missing dog.

Police found her grey and white bicycle behind a garbage dumpster on Dubé Street, about two kilometres from where she was last seen riding her bike alone at about 8 p.m. ET Tuesday night.

  100. Heart, I know from a legal perspective that in the past couple of years new internet laws have been placed about harassment. If the e mail is intended to harass (obviously) then you can file charges. Women have won this in court in cases of stalkers and internet abusers.

  101. It’s amazing how men get so angry where they know they are rejected. This is like that real stupid man who harassed the lesbians and got stabbed and then brought -them- to court, because we all know he is entitled to harass anything that rejects him and his penis counterparts.

I’m glad that you appear to know what to do in this situation. I’m sorry to hear about all of the breaches involving individual WS/TM users, though. Incidentally, I believe that in addition to the harassment laws Kiuku mentioned there are also (at least in CA) laws against unauthorized access and damage to computers, which might cover what happened here.

I’m almost certainly not a member of whatever boards these asshats came from (I’m not even a member of your board, just a blog reader), but I’d be curious if there’s any way I can help.

  103. Good question, Sis. When are men going to dedicate themselves to closing down pedophile sites, rape porn sites, torture porn sites?

Thanks, Kiuku and Mike, much appreciated.

The boards are being repaired, we know how to fix them. Our ISP backed them up recently, so even if we lost stuff, we can get it back, we know how to make sure this doesn’t happen again, we’ll be up and running… hmm. Tomorrow? Optimistically?

I apologize if your comment goes into moderation when it didn’t before. I had to go through and blacklist *lots* of IP addresses, etc., and that means some of you might end up in the spam queue. Please SAVE your comments if they are any longer than a couple of sentences and then let me know if they just go “poof” and you don’t see the “Your comment is awaiting moderation” message.

This is what they did to BB. :”””””””( Ah, BB.

This is why she stopped writing.

And I just interviewed her about that. The interview will be in the next issue of Off Our Backs, which goes out imminently.

    Now it’s me.

We can’t let them do this to us, BB. We just can’t.

The boards will be up and running in no time, better than before, secure.

Thanks for the encouragement and support.

  106. Heart – I am so sorry this happened to you, I wish I could help out in some way. Tho coming in late (as usual! *sigh*) it sounds like you now have it all under control 🙂

I probably received the e-mails in question, (the title does sound vaguely familiar) but I have a heavy-duty spam filter at my ISP’s server end – only addies on my “friendly” list are passed, everything else is “held mail” on the ISP mail-server. Every couple of days or so, I just scan down the address list of the server’s “held mail” for any ‘friendly’ address that I recognise, and the rest is just one-clicked & sent for bulk auto-rejection by my ISP. (Probably dissed some ‘friendlies’ I never knew about too!!) Though everything is logged by the ISP in full detail, its only held on server logfile for a month or so before being dumped. I rarely go into those detailed server-logs – so please let me know if you need more evidence or whatever, and I will check my logs for you?

Just another thought tho, for whatever its worth. I also have secure web-server space & domain, (a gift from some who owe me *big-time*, looong story) but in recent years, I just don’t have much time (long hours & travel in day-job etc) or much energy/interest to do anything with it myself, or at least not all by myself – so it just sits there empty gathering dust, but I’m comfy with allowing it to be used/admin’d by others for a worthy radfem cause, if alternative safe (& free) space is needed the offer is there. Cheers, Rain:)

  109. I loved that space, Heart, and I loved the discussions we were all having. When I read about what had happened I got really angry and just wanted to swear a lot. Which would not have been terribly productive. So I waited till I calmed down but now I just haven’t got anything to say. Except thank you so much for creating that space. Thank you for refusing to give up. Thank you for cleaning up all the shit men keep pouring on you and us, just because we have the capacity to exist and dream and resist. When you have the new boards up and running, I’ll be there and we will continue to exist and dream and resist and we will keep on dreaming and resisting until male supremacy is a distant memory. Because nothing is more precious and necessary to us than ourSelves. And once we begin to have a grip on ourSelves there isn’t anything that they can do to us that is worse than letting go.

  110. This is infuriating but not surprising. I don’t know the right word for the deep, knowing rage I feel when men once again show their hate and their determination to dominate us. I’ve felt it since I was a child hiding in the closet as my father rampaged through the house.

It’s a cold anger and an iron-hard resolve to survive and protect myself and my sisters no matter what it takes. Even if it means smiling now and escaping later, we get our revenge.

You’re right, Heart, it’s our strength that most threatens them. They know we’re stronger than they are, and those of us who don’t hide our strength to placate them get slapped down. You are an example of strength and wisdom. They fear you.

I don’t pity them, though I understand that sentiment; they are pathetic, and their hate makes them unloveable. Like my father, they will probably die alone and detested.

We love and are loved, and we will survive.

  111. I haven’t checked my email in a couple of days. I just checked my accounts last night and this morning and yeah, I’ve got squirrels in the chimney too. One account I’ve only used like 6 times. There’s only 2 or 3 people I’ve emailed from it. So I can narrow it more down.

I’ve hacked emails before so I know changing one’s password isn’t going to do much good. No worries. I’ve never done it maliciously. I’ve only done it for family and friends who forget their password. It’s a very simple thing to do, is my point. Because people forget their passwords all the time. I won’t post how it’s done, less I give anyone else lurking out there any bright ideas.

I’m a government employee so these clowns have inadvertently vandalized government property at both a state and federal level. Hmmm…. what does the government do to hackers? They confiscate their computers and ban them for life from ever using a computer again. Nice going, boys. **chuckle** Hope the way you make your living isn’t by using a computer. Cuz I’ll be reporting this to my supervisor this morning.

  112. mAndrea here.

My yahoo account is safe, for anyone who needs to know. I did receive porn from someone else’s hacked email, though.

You all are going to think my opinion is a little odd, but I’m going to say it anyway.

Things like this make me happy, NOT because of the extra work and frustration for Hearrrt and others, but because this PROVES men hate us, and women will never be safe until we live in a world of our own.

    Their own actions convict them.

Please name the board who sent these perverts.

Let us sue the owner of the board who encourages terrorists.

I will help, donate $$$, whatever. Civil court, please — we get triple damages that way. Forum members have been emotionally traumatized and more than an apology is justified. This harrassemnt will continue until the board owner who encourages terrorism is forced to pay a price he considers too high.

In addition, I demand free access to his site for feminists to combat the hate he so freely allows.

Do not let this go with a mere apology, Hearrrt. Only a “lady” takes abuse lying down, and that is why men have brainwashed women into being “ladies”; so that we will consider “charity and forgiveness” the only appropiate response when they hate us. This brainwashing benefits THEM.

  113. P.S. As a government employee, I’m required to change my password at least once a month. Many places ask that you change your password weekly. That keeps most of the riff raff out. But again, a hacker/cracker doesn’t need a password to reset it. All he needs is your email address. Which is why changing passwords won’t do a whole lot of good.

Change your email address. You can have multiple accounts at yahoo, google, hotmail, etc… Differentiate the email you receive from each blog or board you visit. Have a separate account for each. That way you’ll be able to figure out in a jiffy where the attack is coming from and can simply change out that email address. Always keep an email address you don’t email anyone from. Just use it for business. Like for ebay or paypal. And have one just for family and in real life friends. I know having all these email accounts can be a pain, but it’ll thwart hackers and protect your private information. Just directly access these accounts. Don’t access them from other accounts.

    Posted by Luckynkl | August 2, 2007, 2:12 pm
  114. P.P.S. For those that can’t access their email, the hackers have reset your password. Just go to your email account and and click on where it says, “forget your password?” and reset the password. I think google accounts send the info to your cellphone. Other accounts will send the new password to the other email address you gave them when you signed up for the account.

    Hope that helps.

  122. Yes, it is like when this one man couldn’t get his way to open up a misogynistic “hair dressing” studio with bikini clad women (I assume to service men)..when the community wouldn’t go for it, he protests with porn…across the street from an elementary school. Of course it is just pornographic images of women that he protests with. Of course he must be the victim. Sickos.

“The owner of the now empty building, commonly referred to as the Mirrored House, put female mannequins on display in the window.

“One day, he’ll put the tops on the mannequins. The next day, he’ll just take them down,” said neighbor Arnold Herbst.

Herbst lives in the neighborhood and said the women are often placed in different sexual positions. He said it’s always a steamy scene that’s getting him and other neighbors very heated.

“Pornographic, there is no need for it,” he said.

“It’s a terrible sight, especially when you got to walk the kids. You got to take their heads and turn them away,” Herbst said.

David Douthitt, who owns the house, was trying to make the place a hair salon with a bikini-clad staff, calling it a clip joint, not a strip joint.

“I plan on having a beautiful staff of ladies in designer swimwear kind of theme with the beach town we are,” he said in a 2006 interview.

But the salon never opened. Douthitt couldn’t get the proper permits and neighbors complained that they didn’t want that type of business in their neighborhood.

“Since it’s been going through the courts, since it’s been going through a bunch of stupidity, he’s taking it out on the neighborhood,” Herbst said.

Douthitt said he feels railroaded by both the city and his neighborhood. He said he was trying to open a legitimate business and he wasn’t allowed. He said the displays are his way of protesting. “

  123. Just checking in to let everyone know I’m okay. My Yahoo account was not hacked, but I have a different password for it. I do use the same password on many different boards, but I have my share of enemies from mommy boards and other places that are not Feminist-friendly, so I chose a new, special username when I signed up on the Margins to protect you all and wound up protecting myself instead.

I am not at all surprised by what happened but am greatly appreciative to know for sure and to know more about the details of the attack.

Heart, I am so sorry you have to deal with this mess and once again, my limited computer-savviness pales in comparison to Lucky’s.

The boards have always been a very special refuge for me and I have just been soaking up all of the recent activity and loving to meet the new members. The boards were a safe place for me to land when I was in crisis and I found nothing but comfort, sympathy, and gentle instruction on looking at my situation in a different and more realistic and productive manner than self-blame.

  124. Holy shit Heart, this is awful. It really does prove that we’re right when we talk about how much men hate us and the lengths they’ll go to destroy us — women who they don’t even know. This reminds me of some horrible, horrible shit that an ex-friend of mine did back in high school when we were all first getting e-mail and the Internet. He broke into one girl’s e-mail account and changed her signature to something offensive, tried to break into mine and didn’t succeed, so he started an account in the name of a guy he hated and sent me rape threats that looked like they came from his enemy, and finally, worst of all, he used a cracker program to send an e-mail that looked like it was from my best friend and sent it to everyone on her mailing list. It was a suicide note. Yes, you read that right . He sent all her friends and some teachers a fake suicide note that looked like it was from her. Most telling of all, all three of us were friends of his and had done nothing to hurt him.

So yes, men do, indeed, hate us. And thank you so much, Heart, for being so strong and never giving up and always speaking the truth no matter what, and for being a true fighter for freedom, unlike these men who silence us at all costs and then accuse us of censorship when we so much as criticize them.

OK, now I’m going to go watch that Sinead O’Connor video, which I am extremely excited about. I love Sinead so much I can’t even put it into words. 🙂

  125. Oh, also, I know a lot of people here aren’t huge fans, but I find it interesting that Melissa McEwan’s Shakesville website has also been down for some time now. I think it’s the second time in a month or two that it’s happened, and it always happens after she posts something about rape or misogny. So yeah, a feminist’s website was hacked by the very same shitstains who whine about feminists wanting to censor everything. And there are still tons of idiots out there who say that women who blog don’t face any greater harassment than men….

    Posted by mekhit | August 3, 2007, 4:27 am
  126. Sexual harrassement is illegal precisely because it causes harm. It doesn’t matter if it takes place at work, at home, on the street, or on the internet.

We said men suck, AND THEY PROVED US RIGHT.

We said men are assholes, AND THEY PROVED US RIGHT.

We said men cannot be trusted, AND THEY PROVED US RIGHT.

  128. Aletha, I won’t be sure all of what’s what until I have time to go through everything, but thanks to everybody who saved off e-mails, threads, names, information, much appreciated. The boards are operational again, but we’ve lost some stuff and I want to take a good look one more time tomorrow morning when I am lucid before I reactivate them. We will have to rebuild. Some really important herstory is gone, but we can capture a lot of it cached on Google.

It’s interesting– specifically targeted were the Chararchy, very specifically the Tall Julie thread. Also specifically targeted were Amy’s Brain’s comments and the Motherhood thread. I’m shot, though, haven’t had a lot of time to really look at everything. I was just able to get onto the boards to actually work on them myself tonight.

    Anyway, progress. 🙂

  135. Women, if you can, save EVERYTHING related to this. Save it onto your hard drive– threads, web pages, e-mails, everything you can save.

    Posted by womensspace | August 3, 2007, 7:47 pm
  136. Absolutely essential: SAVE FULL HEADERS IN OPEN E-MAIL

You MUST save FULL HEADERS. It’s no enough to do a screen shot of your inbox, or the open e-mail even, if it’s not with FULL HEADERS.

This tells where the e-mail originated Awhat path it followed to get to you. If it was routed, the routing cos will be served a warrant for identifying information.

go to options in your e-mail host
    set for full headers.
open the e-mail and check that you have a long, approx or more, 6 inches of headers above the e-mail text and pix.
do a screen save as directed for IE or Firefox whichever you use.

The FULL HEADERS are what the police and ISPs will need. Without that… .

You don’t need to figure out how to read the headers, just get them.

  137. Wow, I am brand new here as of today. I found this site through the story of Heart’s involvement in homeschooling.

This site is something I have needed, and I plan on being a regular. I grew up homeschooled, in a family that sat in the on the fence between of “unschooling” and “fundamentalism”. Unfortunately my parents think they have failed at homeschooling because I do not toe their religious line any longer. I would contend they succeded, but they don’t know what to do with me.

I went to college and got a degree in engineering, and even though they pressured me into the engineering field, I don’t think my mom actually ever expected me to use the degree. I now live over 1000 miles away from them (with my multi-racial boyfriend) and am the family heathen.

I have a feeling that womensspace is going to be a balm for my bruised (but intact) soul.

Heart, I would greatly appreciate an invite to your new forum, once it gets up and running. Due to your current comprimised security situation I’m not sure where else to ask for an invitation.

Best of luck in resolving the situation, and it is wonderful to meet all of you,

I was going to sage the OP, until I read this.

I spent the weekend fixing a co-worker’s computer. She had heard through the grapevine that I fix women’s computers for free. That’s cuz it drives me bugshit the way men exploit women. And sure enough, some guy wanted to charge her $100 just to look at it when the cable company couldn’t hook her up, even tho they wound up sending 4 guys over to try and figure it out. Thoughts of “how many men does it take to screw in a lightbulb” started running through my head. When they were through, it still didn’t work, and wouldn’t boot up at all without going right into the blue screen of death and that’s when my co-worker came to me.
I saw right away what the problem was. The guy that had sold her the computer had given her an illegal copy of Windows XP. Asshole. There was no ethernet port to be seen on the computer so the cable company tried to hook her up via usb. Well, in order for a high speed cable modem to work, the computer must be running usb 2.0. She was only running 1.1. She had a utility disk from the motherboard manufacturer to install the usb 2.0 driver but I figured out real quick the manufacturer was full of it. It wasn’t a usb 2.0 driver. The manufacturer just wanted you to install the usb 2.0 driver by updating Windows with SP1 or 2. Which posed a problem. Because Microsoft is not going to update an illegal copy of Windows XP.

    Anonymous 07/07/31(Tue)14:39

Well, I never let a little thing like that stop me. So I wiped the 2 hard drives clean, reinstalled Windows and tried using my XP Professional upgrade disks to bypass it. No go. Microsoft wasn’t buying it. But I saw something odd. When I installed XP, it kept discovering an ethernet port and began installing a network. I searched again for an ethernet port. None could be seen so I said, “WTF?” There had to be one somewhere. So I took the computer apart and voila, there it was. The guy that had installed the motherboard in the case had never punched out the hole for the ethernet port so it wasn’t visible. So I dismantled the insides, took out the motherboard and punched out the hole. Voila. We now had an ethernet port. Which is much better and faster than usb. I put it all back together, plugged in the ethernet cable and voila, within seconds, we had internet access and all was well in Lucky land.

My co-worker jumped up and down screaming and clapping her hands with delight. That in itself was worth all my time and trouble. She thought it was hilarious that I could do what a half dozen professional men couldn’t do. And what’s more, I did it for free. She told me, “You’re in the wrong business, baby. Do you know how much money you could be making?” And I said, nah, I’m not in it for the money. I do it because I like doing it. I’d starve to death if I did it for a living. Cuz I’d give away all my services to women free. She asked why. Does it have anything to do with that? She had spied the radical feminist tattoo on my upper arm. I just winked and smiled and said, yeah, it goes something like that.

    Anonymous 07/07/31(Tue)14:40

I do not ever mention the word feminism unless I know the person I’m speaking with is a feminist. It really is the “F” word to the general public and nothing will turn a person on you faster. So I don’t mention it. I just do it. What I call random acts of feminism. And women will fall right in step with me as long as I don’t mention the “F” word. So who needs to mention the word? chuckle

My co-worker is going to take my daughter, Stillwater and I out to dinner at my favorite seafood buffet in exchange for my services. That, in my opinion, is much better than cash. I’m not talking about the food (altho that certainly is icing on the cake). I’m talking about women giving of themselves and their time (which women have so little of these days) and their friendship. It makes a statement. And that’s what really makes the world go ’round, in my opinion, baby.

    Anonymous 07/07/31(Tue)14:40

In the meanwhile, women are starting to line up for my services. But that’s ok. That’s how it all starts. One woman at a time. Pass it on. Viva la feminism! But shhhhh… don’t mention what it is. wink

Not sure if it is raid worthy, but that is an EPIC pasta.

  143. Notice all the pseudo military talk – “If any of you /i/insurgents” and the general “tone” of the “attack”

Reminds me of how most men cannot attack other men who have any power over them – so they turn to abuse women and/or children because *they* are the only *safe* quarry.

    Posted by sparklematrix | August 3, 2007, 10:37 pm
  144. Also notice, when males attack other males and data is lost, time is spent recouping and rebuilding the destruction, they are arrested, go to court, are fined, jailed.

What is happening with this Heart? I want to see these men charged with this. There is a law written about a year ago that covers this situation. You just need their ISP numbers. The service providers are supposed must hand the information over to police.

Why is it a crime when it’s done to men and what men own, but just fun and adventure when we women are their victims; women who have so little, must work hours and hours at minimum wage to pay for what we have, and house us and our children and elders with that small amount of money?

    Posted by womensspace | August 3, 2007, 11:15 pm
  147. Actually I can thank wikipedia for finding Heart. She was mentioned in the entry on the “Quiverfull” movement, as being an ex- member.

The “History of Homeschooling” resonated with me for a lot of reasons. My mother vaccilated between people she (affectionately) called “the bean sprout crew” of anti-establishment homeschoolers, and the fundamentalists, who although she was one, persecuted her when she decided to homeschool me in 1981. (this was before Dobson said it was ok) She was a maverick fundamentalist who was homeschooling before homeschooling was “the thing”. And when she started it was *strictly* for reasons of academic freedom for her children. Even though she was later co-opted into the more fundamentalist stream of homeschoolers.
I think we turned out much better as a result. (There was a lot of pressure on me to be the “perfect child” but that’s a side issue because they had to justify to everyone that they weren’t wrecking me by keeping me out of school)

We are all grown now and mom eventually quit running a homeschooling consulting business because she couldn’t stand (again, even though she is a fundamentalist herself) how the fundamentalists were becoming even more insular, and devaluing the higher education of women, since all they were going to do was “work in the home”…. yet at the same time it is hard for her to intellectually adjust to the fact that I’m *not* a stay at home mom, nor am I a wife, or mother. Nor do I really aspire to be any of the above.

In some ways she was a fabulous feminist mother, because from within the patriarchy she raised a daughter who could never submit to it. (and all things considering I came out pretty unscathed despite the fundamentalism) I suspect that who I am is a reflection of some of her deepest beliefs even if she can’t admit them to herself. If she’d really bought into the patriarchy she wouldn’t have raised me to be an independent thinker.

  150. I am suspicious of new people popping up and asking for an invite to an private forum — especially right at this very moment. Not everyone is your friend, and some clods fake feminists rhetoric very well.

Apologies if I am wrong, but really I am sick of this crap. It truly would be nice to have a “invitation only” forum. There are plenty of places where anybody and their dog can post, including this blog. “Invitation only” would mean, by default, that only people with a posting history somewhere would be invited.

Hearrrt, if you let just just anybody join, whenever just anybody pops up and claims to be a feminist, the whole point of “invitation only” is moot. Please do not underestimate the hate for us. If someone really was a feminist, and aware of the internet’s treatment of women, they would understand the need for security and a posting history. I too could fit in on a fundie board, at least initially, if that was my goal.

Arantxa, really sorry. My nym requires a little parsing out.

We are compared to horrible human beings who were willing to murder innocent people for elitist reasons, but magically we should not be insulted by this comparision. Somehow the genocidal maniacs should be insulted that they are compared to women who want equal rights.

Seems silly to me, so I’m making fun of it. Plus, I really don’t care for men all that much, and I’m a big meanie. Is it my fault that people keep assuming things without asking for clarification?

  156. I have received more porn. More proof that men suck. More proof that some men, in all their grand entitlement glory, believe that women should be punished for wanting *one* stinking, tiny little place to BE LEFT ALONE.

Interesting that they feel entitled to inflict themselves on unwilling females. I wonder how physically violent and abusive these clods are to the females around them?

Somebody’s doin’ the raping, folks — and it sure ain’t the men who actually respect boundries.

At the individual level, men are more likely to sexually assault if they have hostile and negative sexual attitudes towards women and identify with traditional images of masculinity and male privilege (Heise, 1998; O’Neil &Harway, 1977). At the level of the immediate context in which violence takes place – typically families or other intimate or acquaintance relationships – male dominance is a strong predictor of the likelihood of sexual violence against women. At the interpersonal level, another predictor especially among young men is attachment to male peers wo encourage and legitimate woman abuse (Heise, 1998). And at the macro-social level, rates of violence against women are higher in contexts in which manhood is defined in terms of dominance, toughness, entitlement to power or male honour, there are rigid gender roles, and violence is condoned as a means to settle interpersonal disputes (Heise,1989).

  161. Those hackers were well out of line when they attacked your website. I heard about this incident from my life partner Philipa and part of me is shocked to see that these people have made it their mission to personnally attack you (another part realises that men have been doing this for centuries, persecuting women to make themselves feel beter). Boys in high school would sometimes bully me, I was never really a girly-girl and they made fun of me for not being “normal”. I would play basketball with the boys, and I was good. However one particular day I had a conflict with a boy from my school, We fought and my mom the saint that she was would not stand for this, contacting the bullies parents, she even supported my idea to move (somewhere where I could escape the bullies). I suggest we too move so that we can escape these infantile pathetic little children.
